Michael P. McMillan
Michael P. McMillan is the President and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, a nonprofit organization that has been providing social services to the region since 1918. Each year, the Urban League serves close to 100,000 residents through 27 programs with 225 staff in 11 locations, providing support in the form of jobs, economic opportunity, educational excellence, community empowerment, civil rights and advocacy programs. With its national headquarters in New York, the Urban League in St. Louis is the largest and highest-ranked of nearly 100 affiliates.
In response to the crisis in Ferguson, McMillan created the Save Our Sons program in St. Louis County to help 500 African-American men find jobs and he organized the Urban League’s largest job fair in its history at St. Louis Community College - Florissant Valley. In July 2015, McMillan and Urban League supporters broke ground on the Urban League Community Empowerment Center of Ferguson, to be housed on the site of the former QuikTrip that was burned down on West Florissant during the Ferguson crisis. He also created the Whitney M. Young Society for Leadership Donors to the Urban League.
Previously for almost seven years, McMillan served as the License Collector of the City of St. Louis, administering an annual budget of over $60 million. Prior to serving as License Collector, McMillan was Alderman of the 19th Ward for a decade, supporting $1.25 billion in economic development and neighborhood revitalization. He was the youngest person elected as an Alderman and License Collector in the history of the City of St. Louis.
McMillan currently sits on more than 20 Boards of Directors, including the Muny, American Red Cross, Children’s Hospital, St. Louis Regional Chamber, the St. Louis Community Foundation, Boy Scouts, Ranken Technical College, Fontbonne University, Reliance Bank, Heat Up/Cool Down St. Louis, St. Louis Zoo, Regions Bank Community Development Corporation, Lewis and Clark Community College Foundation, Workforce Investment Board of St. Louis County and several more.
McMillan is a graduate of Saint Louis University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in African-American Studies and a minor in Political Science with an emphasis on Finance.
Additionally, McMillan has earned an Eisenhower International Fellowship among more than 150 other awards and honors from institutions and organizations ranging from the White House to Ebony Magazine to the Trumpet Awards, and many more.
